Sioux Valley Energy manager’s tie to Special Olympics South Dakota

Students compete in a race during the Special Olympics South Dakota.

Each year at our Annual Meeting, we share a video focused on different facets of cooperative social responsibility at Basin Electric and in our membership.

You can find what social responsibility means to Basin Electric within the Seven Cooperative Principles. We stand for working for our members. We stand for democracy, education, and cooperation among cooperatives. We stand for our communities – filling the needs we see – just as we did all the way back to building our own power poles and power plants to bring electricity to our farms and ranches.

We are sharing pieces of the cooperative social responsibility video here.

Basin Electric and the electric cooperatives of South Dakota contribute to the Special Olympics. We Interviewed Darryl Nordquist, CEO of Special Olympics South Dakota and Tim McCarthy, CEO & General Manger of Sioux Valley Energy.

They talk about interactions with the athletes and the opportunity to bring athletes together from across the state. They recently built the Unify Center in Sioux Falls, a place where those with intellectual disabilities and without play together. The cooperatives got behind them in order to serve a bigger purpose than just providing electricity.
