Basin Electric to buy from the largest solar project in South Dakota

Yesterday, Basin Electric and Geronimo Energy announced Basin Electric will buy power from the Wild Springs Solar Project, a 128-megawatt solar energy project in South Dakota, about 20 miles east of Rapid City. Wild Springs is set to begin operation in 2022, and will be the largest solar project in South Dakota.

This is the first time in Basin Electric’s history the cooperative is buying solar generation on a large scale to serve its membership. After many years of research, the cooperative has determined a solar power purchase agreement is an economical option for buying power.

Why now?
Solar energy projects are becoming economical options. Low-cost renewable energy resources provide an option to provide affordable, reliable power to our members. Solar energy further diversifies our resource portfolio, which includes wind, nuclear, natural gas, coal, recovered energy generation, and hydro.

Is solar really reliable?
Solar energy provides generation during daytime hours when our system may be peaking. This resource coupled with other resources can help us provide reliable and economic power to our members.
