Unexpected treasure found buried in Montana co-op’s closet

“Rural Electric,” by Montana artist Don Greytak, will be featured on the cover of Sheridan Electric Cooperative’s 2017 annual report, which comes out on Oct. 13.

When Scott Westlund, member services manager for Sheridan Electric Cooperative, a Basin Electric Class C member in Medicine Lake, Montana, looked in one of the office’s closets recently, he found an unexpected treasure – a nearly pristine print depicting a rural couple’s joy after receiving electricity for the first time.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Westlund says. “I wondered why in the world something so nice would be in the closet, not out on display.” After seeing the picture, he says he knew it would be the perfect cover illustration for the co-op’s annual report, because its theme is technology.

In addition to putting it on the cover of the annual report, the picture is now hanging in Westlund’s office.

Sheridan Electric General Manager Rick Knick says he remembers seeing the artwork hanging in the board room when he was hired 22 years ago, but it must have gotten moved when the pictures on the wall got rotated a while back. “I’ve always loved that picture,” Knick says. “I’m not sure where it came from originally, but it’s a good reminder of who we work for.”

See the picture on Sheridan Electric’s 2017 annual report, which will be available on Oct. 13.
