Travis Helfrich, a yard operator at Leland Olds Station and founder of Coal Country Coffee, shares his premium coffee with the less fortunate in the community.

Sometimes distraction gets the best of us. But when Travis Helfrich, yard operator at Leland Olds Station and founder of Coal Country Coffee, got distracted, it was a blessing to others.

During a recent roasting of Helfrich’s “Boilermaker,” blend, Helfrich says he wasn’t paying attention and the beans ended up getting roasted darker than they should have. “I ground them up, brewed it, and tried the coffee … and it was actually pretty good, so I threw a label on it that said ‘good coffee’ and decided to donate it to charity.”

Helfrich had been seeing posts on Basin Electric’s Facebook page about employees volunteering at Heaven’s Helpers Soup Café in Bismarck, North Dakota and decided that would be the lucky recipient of the 10-15 pound happy mistake. “I didn’t even realize there was a soup kitchen right in our backyard,” he says. “Now that I know, and I know they need coffee, I will continue to donate it – even if I don’t mess up.”
