Mike Risan, Basin Electric senior vice president of Transmission, has dedicated his career to making sure co-op members at the end of the line have reliable, affordable electricity readily available at their fingertips.

This summer, Risan’s career with Basin Electric reaches the end of its line. Like the transmission lines he studied and planned across the co-op’s service area, retirement is on the horizon.

His retirement comes not long after his 40th anniversary at Basin Electric. It was June 5, 1978, when Risan walked through the doors of the co-op, newly graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in electrical engineering.

As his career progressed, Risan became more involved in regional activities, working with external organizations like what was then the Midcontinent Area Power Pool and various operating groups and committees, with the goal of keeping the lights on for Basin Electric’s members.

A personal highlight for Risan occurred at Basin Electric’s 2015 Annual Meeting, when he and Harris shared the stage and ended their remarks by walking across the stage to shake hands. This gesture symbolized the relationships between the organizations, and the close professional relationship and friendship the gentlemen fostered over the years, Risan says.
