Basin Electric holds special Career Day for local high schoolers

More than 900 Bismarck, ND, area high school students got the chance to learn about careers in 15 different fields for the first Basin Electric Career Day, held at Bismarck Public School’s Career Academy Oct. 18.

Professionals in each area talked with students about their jobs, the education they needed for their career, the types of things they do from day to day, and more. Students had the chance to spend time at three different tables during their 45-minute time slot.

The Career Day is an idea that sprang out of Basin Electric’s BE Leaders group. BE Leaders is an annual 12-month program dedicated to empowering employees to explore their leadership potential.

Ryan Lang, Basin Electric designer III and member of BE Leaders, says the Career Day was a good opportunity for students and Basin Electric employees alike. “We had 22 employees present to students in 15 different fields, and it was a good opportunity to learn more about what students today want in a career,” Lang says. “We wanted to expose high school students to careers that exist at Basin Electric. But it wasn’t a job fair, we just wanted them to start thinking about their future, and maybe something today would spark an interest they didn’t know they had.
