Board directors and staff of Basin Electric Class C member cooperative Sioux Valley Energy, headquartered in Brandon, SD, made some stops Sept. 26 in North Dakota’s Coal Country.

The group was in the area for Sioux Valley Energy’s September board meeting, which was held at Basin Electric Headquarters in Bismarck, ND.

Tour stops included Basin Electric’s Antelope Valley Station, Dakota Gasification Company’s Great Plains Synfuels Plant, and The Coteau Properties Company’s Freedom Mine. Accompanying the group from Basin Electric and Dakota Gas were Synfuels Plant Manager Dale Johnson; Matt Greek, Basin Electric senior vice president of Engineering and Construction; and Gary Drost, Basin Electric director representing District 2, L&O Power Cooperative.

Tim McCarthy, Sioux Valley Energy general manager and CEO, found great value in the tours.

“These visits provide our local board perspective. They see first-hand all that goes into the generation of energy that enhances the lives of our members and allows them make a living and care for their families. It gives them a better idea of the scope of the energy industry,” McCarthy says. “They also see how seriously Basin Electric takes its responsibility to be good stewards, as environmental care is built into every process in their various plants as well as in the reclamation activities at the mine, which serves as a major fuel source. It’s invaluable knowledge I wish all our members had.”
