Basin Electric employees help hinder hunger through Casual for a Cause

Casual for a CauseHunger doesn’t take a summer vacation. Each year, tens of thousands of North Dakotans struggle with hunger. Many rely on their local food pantries to get them by when the paycheck just doesn’t stretch far enough.

For the second year, Basin Electric employees are going Casual for a Cause. That means employees contribute to a charity to get the privilege of wearing jeans all summer, Memorial Day through Labor Day.

This year, employees raised $23,000!

The funds collected will go to the Great Plains Food Bank, North Dakota’s largest hunger relief organization and the state’s only food bank. For every dollar donated to Great Plains Food Bank, 97 cents goes directly to hunger relief efforts.

Representatives from Great Plains Food Bank, Nancy Carriveau and Melissa Sobolik, delivered a presentation on hunger for employees. Carriveau and Sobolik talked about how the money donated to the food bank is used, gave a look at some gardens in North Dakota specifically planted to help alleviate hunger (like Basin’s Backyard Garden at Basin Electric Headquarters), and introduced Ending Hunger 2.0, a concept for ending hunger through partnerships.

In addition, Basin Electric employees packed nearly 900 bags of food for schoolkids in May. Read about that: Basin Electric employees pack and deliver four tons of food

Plus, employees planted Basin’s Backyard Garden on May 23. Local news media covered the event. Read about that: Basin’s Backyard Garden planting gets media attention
