Twice a year Basin Electric’s linemen participate in live line training, which provides hands-on safety training on an actual 345-kV transmission line, as well as education of safety equipment.

Their September training featured a special participant: Mike Risan, Basin Electric senior vice president of Transmission. Last year, Risan expressed interest in trying hot stick training, where linemen bond onto an energized power line.

What might be a hair-raising, nerve-racking experience for some, was pure excitement for Risan, an electrical engineer.

“I understand these guys are going to light me up,” Risan stated before riding in an insulated bucket truck with Basin Electric Journeymen Linemen Wayne Bentz and Kyle Kusser to reach the live 345-kV line.

Afterward, Risan and Basin Electric linemen expressed equal appreciation for each other’s roles.

“The scope, scale and size of the lines and voltage levels they work at, I’m just in awe,” Risan stated. “I’m honored I get to work with them.”
