Throwback Thursday: Basin Electric employees, members in flood fight 5 years ago

When rising waters threatened North Dakota residents near the Missouri and Souris rivers in 2011, Basin Electric employees stepped in to help.

Multiple shovels filling sandbags. Employees working to move families’ belongings away from rising waters. A line of FEMA manufactured homes Basin Electric and Verendrye Electric helped secure housing for people in need.

These are images that might come to mind when thinking back to 2011. They help paint a picture of what cooperatives are all about, helping their communities.

Minot flood - Voeller

Kevin Voeller is a former wind technician at PrairieWinds 1. His wife Taya decided the group should paint HOPE on the roof, because their home was the last hope for the neighborhood during the Souris River flood in Minot, ND. She says even if the water had never come, it would serve as a reminder of the way the neighborhood came together.
