Courageous ladies Brave the Shave in 2016

Grace Lang was one to Brave the Shave during the campaign’s flagship event March 11.

Brave. It’s a word that describes those who make personal sacrifices to help others.

In 2016, it’s a word that belongs to the women and girls who have cut or shaved their hair to fight childhood cancer.

This year, more than 30 women and girls shaved their heads in Basin Electric’s Brave the Shave campaign, the region’s largest childhood cancer fundraiser on a mission to help kids with cancer. Nine cut and donated their hair.

Meet a few of the extraordinary ladies who Braved the Shave during the campaign’s March 11 flagship event at the Missouri Valley Family YMCA in Bismarck, ND, and read about why they got involved.

Grace Lang, a third grader from Liberty Elementary in Bismarck, went door to door the week prior to Brave the Shave’s flagship event, surpassing her $1,000 fundraising goal and raising about $2,000. Check out Grace Lang’s Brave the Shave fundraising page.

April Mettler, who’s faced the financial burden that came with helping her previously sick children receive treatment, chose to shave her head to help a local family in 2016. Mettler, who shaved during Brave the Shave’s flagship event, planned on matching all $20 minimum donations with $10, and all $100 minimum donations with $25. Camden Salter, along with her mother Amy, decided to brave the shave in honor of Skyla Stevens, one of the 2016 honorees. Stevens was diagnosed March 25, 2015, with a tumor on her brainstem. Read more on the Amy Salter Brave the Shave fundraising page.

Salter holds strands of her hair to donate.

In total, 399 participants signed up to go bald, donate their hair, or volunteer at the various events. The campaign has raised more than $300,000 and money is still coming in. You can still donate to Brave the Shave.
