What it means to support the Brave the Shave Family Fund

Chaz and Dash Ohlsen

(From left) Chaz Ohlsen stands by his brother, Dash, in Dash’s fight against cancer.

At about this time of year two years ago, the Ohlsen family learned their world was changing dramatically. Dash, just seven-years-old, was diagnosed with Leukemia. Since then, Dash has fought the disease with valor, his parents setting up Team Dash on Facebook, to fight the cancer at every turn.

Today, at nine-years-old, Dash is doing well, and his dad Taner has taken on a leadership role, to help guide the newly formed Brave the Shave Family Fund.

The Brave the Shave Family Fund, administered through the Bismarck (ND) Cancer Center and guided by a steering committee made up of partnering organizations and a family representative, will facilitate wrap-around services and support to our Brave the Shave honoree families to help make a difference in their fight.

The Family Fund is one of the opportunities to raise money to fight childhood cancer this year through Brave the Shave. The five choices are listed on bravetheshave.coop: Brave the Shave Family Fund, St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Sanford Health – Pediatric Oncology, CHI St. Alexius Health’s NICU and Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation.

This annual multi-state charitable campaign raises money for pediatric cancer. The sole mission is to help kids, their families and support the full spectrum of their cancer journey. Since starting this campaign in 2008, more than 2,000 of people have volunteered at Brave the Shave events, cut their hair or shaved their heads to support impacted children, raising nearly $2 million.

Watch Taner Ohlsen talk about what the Brave the Shave Family Fund means to families like his.
