Basin Electric integrated into SPP: Behind the scenes (Video)

At midnight on Oct. 1, 2015, Basin Electric began active market participation in the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), a regional transmission organization. Watch the video.

Though the road leading up to full integration had its bumps, it has provided opportunities for Basin Electric, its staff and membership to better understand and prepare for direct participation in a marketplace, which is an entirely new process for the cooperative.

According to Ken Rutter, vice president of Marketing & Asset Management, Basin Electric entered the market able to do everything it needed to be able to do on day 1.

There was an open phone line between Basin Electric staff, staff at its facilities and SPP staff and the night Basin Electric integrated into SPP. As staff worked to get systems operating as expected, Ken Rutter and others remained on the line.
