Following Basin Electric’s board decision in July 2014 to move forward with joining the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), hundreds of employees across the cooperative have been involved at various levels to ensure it’s done right.
“They’ve really dug in, working long days to make the transition happen by Oct. 1 of this year,” says Ken Rutter, vice president of Marketing & Asset Management.
This week is the last week of what’s called market trials. It’s a period of time, about 10 weeks, where Basin Electric staff find out if the cooperative is ready to fully integrate into SPP.
“We’ve been planning up to this point – the whole project plan – and all the work that’s been done has been preparation for the market trials. Once they’re complete, SPP will have a go/no go decision by July 31 if Basin Electric will participate in the market on Oct. 1,” Rutter says.
