Aside from taking to the razor on the March 13 Brave the Shave event, Breaking Bald, a team representing First Community Credit Union, has found another way to raise money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The team hosted its first-ever poker tournament to a smashing success.
The day-long tournament held at the Tumbleweed Bar and Grill in Lincoln, ND, attracted 88 participants and raised $4,036 for St. Baldrick’s. The team coordinated the event with Roughrider Poker Tour. While most participants were from within 100 miles of the Bismarck area, it attracted participants from as far away as Savage, MT.
Breaking Bald team lead Derrick Becker, a third-time shavee, says the amount raised surpassed their goal for the event. “We anticipated raising $2,000 at most,” he says. “We were thrilled when we found out our poker tournament raised double that amount.”
Becker says the team plans to host the event again next year to raise funds for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and hopes for a bigger turn out. “I’ll start planning next year’s event the week after I get my head shaved (at this year’s Brave the Shave),” Becker says. “I’m hoping for a bigger venue so we can get at least 100 players next year.”
This is the third year First Community Credit Union has participated in Brave the Shave.
