Head-shaving season was jumpstarted in fun fashion March 7 as more than 20 people took part in Sanford Health’s St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event at the UND Center for Family Medicine Building in Bismarck, ND.
The event, part of Basin Electric’s 2014 Brave the Shave St. Baldrick’s campaign, raised more than $18,700 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and donations are still being counted.
A crowd of several dozen people attended to honor children who are battling cancer and their families, as well as cheer those who have raised money for the cause and opted to part with some hair. Dr. Melissa Seibel, was among those who braved the shave after learning about St. Baldrick’s last year.
“I thought, this year I’m just going to go for it,” she said with a laugh.

Several more St. Baldrick’s Brave the Shave events will be held this week, capped off by Basin Electric’s main St. Baldrick’s Brave the Shave event at 1:30 p.m. March 14 at the Missouri Valley Family YMCA. A bake sale and silent auction will accompany the head-shaving, and a few silent auction items are available for online bidding.
