It’s easy to see that Ellen Holt is psyched about Bismarck.
Bismarck is a great place to live
As the recently-hired vice president of human resources sits at her fourth floor office desk, she immediately talks about how excited she is to kayak down the Missouri River, spend time with her husband once they find the right home, and tend to a garden during the summertime.
In light of all the perks this town has to offer, Holt’s main source of enthusiasm is fueled by the joy she feels when working at Basin Electric.
“There’s a lot to love about Basin,” she says with a big smile. “I just had one of those feelings when I interviewed here that this was just a good match for me.”
There is positive support from co-workers at Basin Electric
Holt continues by expressing her appreciation for the support her co-workers have shown her since she started her new job June 10. They’ve been a source of strength for her while her husband, Brandon, has temporarily stayed in La Crosse, WI, to sell the couple’s house.
As Holt explains, it’s a time of positive transition, during which both her daughters are also getting ready to attend college in the fall. One will study in Waukesha, WI, while the other will attend school in St. Paul, MN.
Holt says those around her have made her feel welcome while she’s temporarily been away from her family.
“Everyone here at Basin has said they will keep me very busy so that I don’t have to miss everyone,” she chuckles.

Holt has a strong background in human resources. She’s managed human resources functions in health care, government contracting, banking, marketing and telecommunications. She’s enjoyed learning more about Basin Electric’s operations during her time in Bismarck.
“I have a vast array of industries, but always in human resources,” she says. “This is a little bit new for me, the whole concept of a co-op, so I’m learning that.”
When opportunity arose to work at Basin Electric, it was unexpected for Holt. But, she was immediately impressed with what she saw.
“It was not really a planned endeavor,” she says. “The opportunity was just too good to pass up.”
Basin Electric supports booming industry
Holt is especially excited to be part of the booming industry that exists in North Dakota. She stands by Basin Electric’s vision in supporting the strong economic growth that exists in the state.
“With all those growth needs comes more need for electricity,” she says, adding that Basin Electric is a very stable company with informative employees.
“I was blessed to be able to take the tour the company offers,” she adds, sharing her amazement with the impressive energy facilities the cooperative operates.
The cooperative features a great benefits package
The benefits are also very generous, she says.
“Our benefits are by far some of the best that I have seen, and we should be proud of that as a company,” she says.
Basin Electric values its employees
When it comes down to it, Holts says her role at Basin Electric is all about connecting with and serving employees.
“It’s important that our employees are the forefront of our day every day,” she says.
In addition to enjoying her new job serving the employees at Basin Electric, Holt is eager for her husband to join her so they can enjoy their new home together.
“I just could not be more pleased with my decision to join Basin,” she says. “I think it’s going to be a very good fit for me, personally and professionally.”
