Heitkamp talks energy policy during fundraiser

The Lignite Energy Council sponsored a campaign fundraiser for Heidi Heitkamp May 15. Heitkamp is the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat from North Dakota. U.S. Rep. Rick Berg is her opponent.

Heitkamp made energy policy the topic of discussion at the fundraiser. She has served as a director on the Dakota Gasification Company board for more than 10 years. Dakota Gas is a subsidiary of Basin Electric.

Andrew M. Serri, CEO and general manager of Basin Electric, and Mac McLennan, president and CEO of Minnkota Power Cooperative, introduced Heitkamp. “Heidi has an excellent record in support of Basin Electric, DGC and the lignite industry,” Serri says. “During her years as North Dakota’s Attorney General, she successfully ‘carved out’ an exemption for North Dakota power plants from the costly externality laws of Minnesota imposed by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. While serving on the North Dakota Industrial Commission as Attorney General, Heidi Heitkamp also was the architect of the Partners for Affordable Energy image advertising and grassroots campaign on behalf of coal-based electricity.”
