St. Baldrick’s honoree: Mia Thinnes (Video)

St. Baldrick's 2011

Mia Thinnes and her mom Julie have fun with some of the hats she's received from people who make hats for children with cancer.

St. Baldrick’s is a fun time at Basin Electric. That’s the way it’s meant to be — the head shaving is a lot of fun to watch. The fundraising almost takes care of itself because you want to give money to people who are willing to shave their heads for kids!

And the kids are precious. Mia Thinnes is one of our honorees at this year’s St. Baldrick’s event in Bismarck. Mia is the granddaughter of Bill Peterka, mechanical maintenance supervisor at Antelope Valley Station.

St. Baldrick's 2011

Mia lights up when Lilly gives puppy kisses.

Mia was having headaches at the end of the last school year, bad enough they were making her sick. After migraine medication didn’t help, her doctor ordered an MRI. By the next week, Mia and her family were at Mayo Clinic to have a brain tumor removed. Listen to Mia’s story in the video.

  1. I’m sure part of Mia’s therapy is Lily-the-dog licking her nose! Puppy kisses! Sweet little girl – thanks for sharing her story, Tracie.

  2. That was my favorite part! The way she says, “Puppy kisses… puppy kisses…” Such a little sweetie. 🙂

  3. Great job on this story Tracie! When you hear their stories and listen to what they have been through – it solidifies what a GREAT CAUSE Basin has taken on in St. Baldricks! Thanks for bringing these stories to us.

  4. Glynda, thanks! I agree with you 100% … St. Baldrick’s is all about funding research into childhood cancer… and we all want answers that can help kids like Mia.
