A sun dog at sunrise Jan. 11 at the Crow Lake Wind Project hints at the cold conditions on site. The air temperature was -7 at sunrise, and at noon it was still -3 with a wind chill of -19.
The photo was taken by a member of contractor Wanzek’s construction crew. The video was taken by Jesse Johnson, assistant construction coordinator on the project.
As of that morning, 101 of 108 turbines have had the bases and mid sections installed, and 99 have been topped out. Basin Electric subsidiary, PrairieWinds SD 1, is building the project. The subsidiary will also operate and maintain the turbines.
