Each year, a group of South Dakota legislators takes a trip to North Dakota to tour Basin Electric’s facilities. The lawmakers learn about cooperatives, electricity generation and transmission, coal mining, and coal gasification and carbon dioxide capture.

South Dakota lawmakers and guests huddle up in an elevator at Antelope Valley Station. The group will get to walk on the turbine deck, see inside the boiler, and take in the view from the observation deck.
“Each year that we come back it gets proven again that the more information you provide to the people who are making decisions that affect your lives, the better off you’re going to be,” says Ed Anderson, general manager of the South Dakota Rural Electric Association. “They gain a whole new appreciation for the cooperative business model and understand why it works so well.”
