“Geography has made us neighbors. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners, and necessity has made us allies. Those whom God has so joined together, let no man put asunder.”
John F. Kennedy’s eloquence calls to mind images of a marriage ceremony — but rather than between people, a union between entities; in Basin Electric’s instance, between cooperatives and the federal transmission system of the Western Area Power Administration.
Mike Risan, Basin Electric’s senior vice president of Transmission, shared during the annual meeting a reflection on the history of our partnerships in the transmission arena and how their persistence built a cooperative.
“Here in our 50th year as a cooperative, we stand together facing difficult decisions that will affect how we meet our mission in the future,” he said. “While looking ahead, I often find it helpful to look back and ponder what we overcame in the past to be here for our members today.”
